As I said in the first blog post, the things I post on here are nothing more than an opinion, so disagreement is a viable option!
That being said, a few of my favorite artists have released new music this summer. Artists that I've been waiting on new music from for a long time. However, for the most part, the new music from these artists has been super disappointing. Needtobreathe and Switchfoot are the main two in mind. I LOVE these artists and their music has been very inspiring to me in the past, but my ears feel that their new albums are pumped full of cheese.
With Switchfoot, it started with Fading West in 2014. At first, I wasn't a huge fan of the album, but after giving it a few more listens and watching the accompanying documentary, I became more of a fan. However, a couple of songs, like the Jonas Brothers-esque "Let it out" and "fading West" from the Deluxe edition album have still held a bad taste in my mouth. Sadly, on their newest album, there seems to be more songs like that. All this said, I still think Switchfoot is an awesome band, I still love seeing them live, and they seem to be some of the nicest guys around.
With Needtobreathe, my expectations were quite the opposite. Rivers in the Wasteland was one of my favorite albums of 2014. I loved every song on it, and I was so excited for HARD LOVE (or H A R D L O V E). Once again, I was disappointed. I feel like the musical style is not fitting to Bear's vocals this time around. It's a very relevant, synth-y pop style, but still not fitting. I feel like NTB is a genuine Rock n Roll band, and Rivers in the Wasteland seemed to showcase that. However, I will once again say that I STILL think Needtobreathe is a great band live and seem like nice guys in real life.
Now onto more positive things; Four artists have released new music this summer that has me feeling excited and inspired already: Kings Kaleidoscope, Colony House, Coin, and John Mark Mcmillan. King's K is the only band out of these four that has released a full album, and I love it! It's a little controversial because an F-bomb is dropped in one of the songs, but who cares. I'll go into that another time. Check out Only the Lonely by Colony House, Beyond Control by Kings Kaleidoscope, "Talk too much" by Coin, and "Wilderlove" by John Mark Mcmillan.
If I'm being honest with myself and you, part of me loves giving my opinion like this...I guess everyone does, but I HATE that even a part of me loves it (insert Romans 7:15 reference). The truth is that I need feedback - good or bad - on the things that I do to learn from both mistakes and victories. I'm a very big fan of affirmation, and I'm needy when it comes to that area of life though I usually take it personally for some stupid reason.
Keep that in mind, and join me in the future for a moment! In a couple of months, we're releasing some new material and changing a big part of our band completely, so I have a favor to ask. When you see me out, online, or are in my presence in any way (pretty much the entire world is because of the internet...not that the whole world would ever see this - I bet no more than 3 people will see this. Hope that didn't seem cocky in any way. I'M OVERTHINKING FOR SURE RIGHT?!) please let me know what you think about our new music, new direction, etc. The comments are open on these blogs and social media as well. I want to know what you think - whether it's good or bad! That (constructive) criticism feeds my passion whether I realize it or not. It makes me want to make things better and helps me know if anything I'm doing is right. This is probably the most self-centered post I've written so far.
Feel free to let me know what you think about all the music I mentioned as well!
